چکیده

We present a method for measuring the characteristic length of sea ice based on fitting to a the recentlyfound solution for the flexural response of a floating ice sheet subject to localized periodic loading. Unlike previous techniques, the method enables localized measurements at single frequencies of geophysical interest and, since the measurements may be synchronously demodulated, gives excellent rejection of unwanted measurement signal, e.g. from ocean swell. The loading mechanism is described and we discuss how the effective characteristic length may be determined using a range of localized measurements. The method is used to detemine the characteristic length of the sea ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.

Target Strength Measurement of Myctophid (Benthosema pterotum) in the Oman Sea

Through a series of research cruises conducted by the R/V Ferdows-1 to assess Myctophid resources, using a SIMRAD EK500 scientific echosounder carried out the Target Strength measurement of Benthosema pterotum in the Oman Sea. The principal method was based on a direct in-situ split-beam measurement technique, which is implemented in the EK500 system. For real-time observations ,the target st...

Exploration of Sea Ice Concentrations using Graph Metrics

As an example of “big data,” we consider a repository of Arctic sea ice concentration data collected from satellites over the years 1979-2005. The data is represented by a graph, where vertices correspond to measurement points, and an edge is inserted between two vertices if the Pearson correlation coefficient between them exceeds a threshold. We investigate new questions about the structure of...

Freeboard, snow depth and sea-ice roughness in East Antarctica from in situ and multiple satellite data

In October 2003 a campaign on board the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis had the objective to validate standard Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) sea-ice products. Additionally, the satellite laser altimeter on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) was in operation. To capture the large-scale information on the sea-ice conditions necessary for satellite v...

Recent advances in sea-ice microbiology.

Over the past 50 years there has been much effort invested in the investigation of the ecology of sea ice. Sea ice is an ephemeral feature of the Arctic and Southern Oceans and smaller water bodies such as the Baltic and Caspian Seas. The semisolid ice matrix provides a range of habitats in which a diverse range of microbial organisms thrive. In the past 5 years there has been considerable step...

Leads in Arctic pack ice enable early phytoplankton blooms below snow-covered sea ice

The Arctic icescape is rapidly transforming from a thicker multiyear ice cover to a thinner and largely seasonal first-year ice cover with significant consequences for Arctic primary production. One critical challenge is to understand how productivity will change within the next decades. Recent studies have reported extensive phytoplankton blooms beneath ponded sea ice during summer, indicating...
